Office 2007 Word and Power Point are susceptible to a bug that, when Preview Pane is turned on in 'Windows Explorer', will cause changes not to be saved and file to open as "Read Only" the next time it's opened.
The fix for this is to turn Preview Pane OFF in Windows Explorer. Additional steps can include clearing out the C:\Windows\Temp folder of all content.
